In this article, I try to give in way the most exact possible definition of the Gothics. But, conscious that this one is undoubtedly not complete, I ask you to excuse me if I forget some details. If you see that I forgot an important point, do not hesitate with me to make share via the comments of it.

The Gothic movement, before being a musical movement, is a philosophical movement. The Gothics are not characterized by the music (indeed, they can just as easily listen to black metal, pure Gothic and classical music!), nor by the look (all the Gothics do not get dressed inevitably in black with new rock'n'roll at the feet, it acts of a question of taste!) but by the way of thinking. The Gothics have a certain vision of the world which is clean for them and they can take the retreat required to have a vision just possible of what surrounds them. This is why one speaks about philosophical movement when the Gothics are evoked. Nevertheless, I specify all the same that the “Gothic” term was first of all applied in order to indicate a style of music, for then qualifying the groups which practises this music. For a few years, the term has been given to the people according to these groups. The base of the word thus does not have shows anything of it with a vestimentary look.

As for the musical aspect, I have say that the Gothics can in makes listen to any type of music, but they generally have a particular attraction for all that sounds rock'n'roll owing to the fact that the Gothic movement comes from the English punk movement (c.f. ticket “origins of the Gothic movement” for the explanations).

Concerning the religious aspect, it should be known that, although the majority of them are atheistic, there are Christian Gothics, and even Gothics satanists although that is rare. In a total way, the Gothic has nothing to do with the religions bus indeed, the majority of the Gothics are atheistic, even agnostic. Nevertheless, one can notice that often, they relate to them of the reversed religious symbols, like the reversed cross or the reversed pentacle. That does not want inevitably to say that they are satanists as much seem to think it. The significance would be more a criticism of all that has report/ratio with the religion but without in speaking about it directly. The satanists need to say high and strong their hatred of the religions. The Gothics, them, do not feel hatred, because it is not of the violent ones, they are particularly peaceful, moreover. They show that they criticize all that has a religious aspect while carrying reversed religious symbols but do not speak about it.

In connection with the state of mind, it is important to retain that, in spite of the very macabre rumours which circulate (scarifications with excess and I pass from there), all the Gothics inevitably do not like blood or violence! It is similar for the cemeteries. I.e. how, although it is true that many Gothics like the cemeteries, it is not for the morbid aspect of the thing! It is more for the architectural aspect, and the beauty which the Gothics find with these places, which they like to come there.

Concerning the sentimental aspect, the Gothics in general are very attracted by all that touches with romanticism (c.f. ticket “origins of the Gothic movement” for more information). One can also notice that in addition to impassioning itself for this romantic aspect of the life, the majority of them are large interested parties by the occultism. It is not rare to see a Gothic saying only it practises the wicca, for example. All that concerns supernatural and the occult sciences, the unexplained and unexplainable things interests them. At least, in general, that is not inevitably a general information.

All this to show that we pass in vain for curious animals on television, through grinds reports all further away from the truth the ones than the others, it does not remain about it less than we are not less human than the others, we live like everyone, we make our races like everyone and we go to the bed the evening as everyone (we are not vampires!). Only our way of seeing the world is different...
